Whisker, the upright bass and synth duo of Andrew Scott Young and Ben Billington finds the two-storied improvisers getting into new jurisdictions of fried sounds. Both have put in time with projects like ADT, Circuit Des Yeux, Ryley Walker and Quicksails, but with Whisker’s debut release Straight From the Bottle, the duo begins in an unglued state and deteriorates from there. Two side-long sprawls work in spurts of communication and frustration. The wooden timbre of bowed bass and the brittle, airless synth tones cycle through moments of clashing, gelling and then abruptly going in wildly different directions. Unpredictable for the duration, Billington and Young lock into a restless, uneasy dialogue that never fully resolves or relaxes.
