The recursive excursions MSHR maps out on Phased Trance Constructions could theoretically go on forever, but, in practice, drop off at a natural trail head. The most musically recognizable areas the duo has ever explored emerge from the switch backs, turns, and rock thickets the frenetic compositions walk through. Amidst fat pulsing electro-shock stomps and swirls arise small snippets of lost DIY electronic underground masterpieces, like a favorite forgotten pop-gem busting through the radio noise on a long drive. Neither a race nor a sprint, Phased Trance Constructions, is a quixotic wander that allows room for whatever zone needs to be occupied in the moment; drones, crackles, sparse bubbles of euphoric nostalgia, and good old siren style thwacking. Hazardous s-turns swipe from the shrillest to the richest deep frequency bands in a decisive and harmonious manner, leaving the listener to question whether or not the high pitched wringing came moments or many minutes before the wavy low pulse that is currently sounding. The briefness of the individual legs of the trip allow for total exploration of the frequency spectrum and endless sonic possibilities in the path MSHR’s homemade synthesizers chart. Taking MSHR’s ride repeatedly leads to questioning whether or not it’s the same journey every time —so much new keeps appearing— but something does become clear: these pieces of music are not just endless in theory.
